At Momentum Physical Therapy & Sports Rehab, we find a large part of our job is to educate our patients and the community about what physical therapy actually is and how coming to therapy can help them. Many of the patients we see have had limited or no prior experience with physical therapy in the past. They often have many questions and aren’t exactly sure about what physical therapists do, or how coming to therapy can help them. For that reason, we thought we would put together a brief explanation about what physical therapy is.
What Is Physical Therapy?
If you asked a therapist what Physical Therapy is, they would tell you it is the art and science of helping people get out of pain, get moving again, and get back to their lives. Physical therapists find the source of your pain or symptoms and work on those problems with targeted exercises, a variety of hands-on treatments known as manual therapy, and physical agents like heat; ice; electrical stimulation; and ultrasound. The purpose of these treatments is to heal damaged tissues, control and decrease swelling, restore movement, and improve motor control; which is the ability to move with coordination, control, and strength while avoiding reinjury.
Common problems that Physical Therapy can help include:
- Back & Neck Pain
- Knee & Ankle Injuries
- Shoulder & Elbow Injuries
- Hand Injuries
- Sprains & Strains
- Fractures
- Rehab Before and After Surgery
- Chronic Pain and Headaches
- Low Back Pain During and After Pregnancy
- Balance Problems and Dizziness
- Jaw Problems (TMJ)
If you are having pain, ask your doctor if Physical Therapy is right for you. If you know somebody who is in pain, ask if they have heard of, or tried, physical therapy. If you are in the San Antonio area and want to get back the life you deserve, and back to the activities you love, we can help.
