EDUCATION THROUGH EXPERIENCE
Education can present itself in many forms and fashions. I began my career in the field of physical therapy as a physical therapy technician in the early 1990s. I was fortunate to find myself surrounded by some of the best physical therapists and physical therapist assistants in the city of San Antonio. They often took the time to explain the mechanism of injury, treatment protocols and expected outcomes of particular patients. In their eyes, I was not seen as a simple technician but as an integral part of their treatment team. After being accepted into the physical therapist assistant program in 1999, the benefits of these valuable experiences revealed themselves. They not only assisted me with the competency to complete my education but they also provided me with a level of confidence, as well.
TEAM APPROACH TO QUALITY CARE
Today, much like before, my education through experience continues. I feel fortunate to find myself in a similar learning environment where the team approach to quality care provides the very best treatment options to our patients. Weekly staff meetings, in-services and a warm, friendly environment promote the sharing of ideas. This growth of knowledge is not relegated to staff members alone. I, along with my colleagues, feel it is important to include the patient in this process in order to help them understand their injury, relinquish their fears and educate themselves on how to best deal with the problem at hand. I have found this team effort to be not only beneficial to all who are involved, but also unique in its approach to today’s bustling world.
SERVING MY COMMUNITY
It has been a great privilege to serve my community over the last six years as a physical therapist assistant. In addition, I have returned to St. Phillip’s College and participated on the screening board for the class of 2009. I have hosted several students from the program and find it an honor to be teaching while continuing my lifelong education at the same time.
